TruDonor Biometric Identification Enhances Security for Blood Donors

The health industry’s top finger-enabled biometric identification systems vendor, BIO-key International, has announced that the TruDonor biometric identification technology of BIO-key will be deployed by the Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) to improve the blood donors’ security and convenience, in late 2010.

OBI is America’s twelfth biggest non-profit regional blood center that incorporates the patented fingerprint identification system of BIO-key for providing a convenient and fast method for blood donors’ identity establishment.

This system is able to automate the donors’ checking process and safeguards the identity of the donor to create sensitive identification forms like social security numbers and driver licenses. By the mere touch of the finger of the donor, the software is able to search the data base of OBI for decreasing the check-in time, almost removing human errors, and provide a positive ID when the check-in process is on.

Patients from more than 150 medical units in north central Texas and Oklahoma are given blood supply by the Oklahoma Blood Institute. This supply is collected through 700 Institute employees who work with 2,600 drive coordinators and 800 volunteers.
2,600 drive coordinators. Besides its laboratories, such donor centers are also present in the Oklahoma City-region, Ponca City, Ada, Tulsa, Enid, Ardmore, Ada,  and Lawton. OBI also functions in the Wichita Falls-based Texas Blood Institute.

John Armitage, M.D., Chief Executive and President at the Oklahoma Blood Institute informed that Oklahoma is able to safeguard the privacy of the donor by utilizing the BIO-key solution and, at the same time, is able to decrease the probability of aliases and duplicate donor IDs in their system.
