Sensors in Steering Wheels to Detect Driver Fatigue

Published on January 29, 2011 at 4:29 AM

Flexpoint Sensor Systems has stated that it is designing special sensor-based products in collaboration with Italy-based Victor. The products will be used for applications in the automobile and truck industry

The sensors will be deployed in steering wheels of vehicles, and will incorporate Victor´s RimSense Technology that is a sensing system embedded into the rim of the steering wheel. This offers multiple safety functions. Flexpoint is redesigning its Bend Sensor Technology in switches for integration into the controls that are placed on the steering wheel. The products from Victor are deployed for both its OEM and retail clientele.

According to Massimo Rabaglino, managing director of Victor, this collaboration will offer a very compact and cost-effective solution to motoring problems. The sensitive device that is essential to detect a driver’s level of tiredness uses signals emitted from the steering wheel about the  driver’s every action.

Victor products will be identified by the aluminum, stainless steel, leather, wood and composite materials that will be integrated into the system in different shapes and colors.
