OmniVision Purchases Image Sensor Related Patents from Eastman Kodak Company

OmniVision nearly doubled its intellectual property through the purchase of as many as 850 image sensor related patents and applications from Eastman Kodak Company. The deal, which was worth 65 million dollars, was completed on 31st of March.

Shaw Hong who is the CEO of OmniVision saw the purchase of patents as an opportunity to help OmniVision to re-emerge as a leader in image sensing technologies. They went ahead with the purchase based on projections that stated that the future demand for CMOS-based sensors was poised to quadruple over a period of few years.

OmniVision has acquired around 850 U.S and foreign patents and applications through the deal.
The patents include many granted patents of CMOS technologies that covered sensor work in the early stages and on fundamental concepts. Further improvements on foundation architecture including latest features and functions, future improvements in performance, miniaturization and cost reduction technologies were all part of the patents.

OmniVision is in the forefront of advanced digital imaging solutions. Its CMOS imaging technology is used by many consumer and commercial giants.
