By Andy Choi

STMicroelectronics, a service provider of electronic applications and supplier of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), has developed the increased performance, ultra-less-power 3-axis acceleration sensors that are available in 2x2 mm packages.

The size of the current-producing devices has been decreased by a factor of 2 for employing in space- and power-constrained consumer applications. The company’s newly introduced ultra-low-power; high performance accelerometers can be perfectly used for motion sensing applications including tablets, gaming controls and mobile phones.

The company’s high performance accelerometers LIS2DM and LIS2DH deliver very accurate output with high resolution across the full-scale ranges of plus or minus 2g/plus or minus 8g/plus or minus 16g, and also improve stability over temperature and time. These accelerometers are integrated with advanced features such as two programmable interrupt signals, which ensure instant notification of free falls and detected movements, and 4D/6D orientation detection signal.

Considering the power constraints in portable devices that are battery operated, the ST’s new acceleration sensors are designed with sleep modes, power-down and a first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory block options for ensuring smarter management of power. The ST’s accelerometers are also integrated with a temperature sensor and a self-test function, which permits the customers to check the operations of the assembled sensor. The ST’s ultra-less-power 3-axis acceleration sensors can be compatibly used with the LIS2Dx software system, which enables the customers to easily protect their assets in application development.
