ABB Expands Communication Systems by Acquiring Tropos Networks

ABB, a leader in automation and power technologies, has decided to acquire a Silicon Valley-based company in Sunnyvale, California, named as Tropos Networks, a provider of wireless products and technologies for distribution area communication networks.

With this acquisition, the company has broadened its offering to the customers in public infrastructure, transportation, mining and power industries. Tropos Networks functions with 55 employees and provides wireless Internet protocol broadband connections that feature high reliability, scalability, key characteristics and security. These broadband solutions are suitable for use in intelligent grid and other outdoor industrial uses.

By acquiring Tropos portfolio, the company can strengthen its focus on the industries in North America and makes its presence in industrial and utility communications across the world. There is an increase in demand for secure, reliable and cheap communication networks, due to advancement in automations used in power grids and other infrastructures.

Jens Birgersson, head of Network Management business of ABB, stated that the technologies of Tropos Networks are ideal for their communication solutions and also helps them to provide highly reliable private networks that can be used in mission-critical applications. Birgersson added that with the acquired portfolios of Tropos Networks, their company also extends its presence in US markets.

Tom Ayers, Chief Executive Officer and President of Tropos Networks, stated that the combination of the automation technologies, system architecture and services of ABB with Tropos Networks’ wireless communication solutions benefits the customers. Ayers also added that with ABB’s support, their company will offer network solutions to the customers in new industrial sectors and geographies.

The wireless communication networks of ABB play a key role in providing highly reliable modern power systems. The acquisition of Tropos Networks by ABB is anticipated to end in the third quarter of 2012.
