Biometric Facial Recognition for Police and County Sheriff’s Departments

The Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association (MSA) has awarded a contract to Plymouth-based Biometric Intelligence & Identification Technologies (BI2 Technologies) for providing a novel facial recognition system to twenty-eight police departments, as well as fourteen departments of the County Sheriff in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The company will implement Conway, New Hampshire-based leading facial recognition technologies vendor Animetrics’s solution. Animetrics, is a global leader in 2D-3D technologies and holds patents for  face recognition.

Biometric identification

The vision of Animetrics involves accurate recognition of uncontrolled and      natural face images that are acquired from all forms of cameras.

The Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association’s Executive, Director James F. Walsh, informed that these systems, besides enhancing the capabilities of the Sheriffs, will also improve the Commonwealth’s ability to enforce law, share and use data, as well as face recognition biometric technology for protecting the Massachusetts’ citizens better.

BI2 Technologies’ CEO and President Sean G. Mullin explained that the association of the Massachusetts Sheriffs is establishing a national standard through the implementation of facial recognition system in the state and ensure that the technology is provided to every local police departments and county Sheriff. He added that effective biometric identification sharing capabilities statewide is the sort of collaborative effort that all law enforcement will require.

Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association’ Executive Director James F. Walsh revealed that the project symbolizes the extension of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department’s vision.

Animetrics President Paul Schuepp informed that the distinctive technologies of Animetrics and its established performance in applications of the U.S. Department of Defense has enabled the development of the state-of-the-art identification functionality using natural and complete information related to the  three dimensional face image. He explained that 3D and 2D face biometric templates are used by the matching algorithms of Anumetrics. These algorithms address problems experienced under highly challenging environmental scenarios under which the police departments, house of corrections, jails, and Commonwealth’s Sheriffs function.
