Sanborn Map Acquires Leica ALS70-HP High-Pulse-Rate Airborne LiDAR Sensor

The Sanborn Map Company, Inc. (Sanborn) has purchased a Leica ALS70-HP high-pulse-rate airborne LiDAR sensor, and the cutting-edge system already is benefiting Sanborn customers.

"This advanced system not only increases data acquisition efficiency, but also facilitates a seamless production workflow, enabling much faster turnaround times for customer deliverables on projects of all sizes," says Brandon Tilley, Sanborn LiDAR Department supervisor. "The system also allows 3-D scans that exceed both the relative and absolute accuracies that our government and commercial customers demand."

The ALS70-HP is a compact laser-based system designed to acquire high-density topographic and return-signal-intensity data. The sensor is designed for general-purpose mapping at the flying heights most widely used, and can accommodate greater terrain relief due to its higher maximum flying height. The system produces high-density point clouds for corridor, urban, flood plain or general-purpose airborne mapping in a fraction of the time previously required.

"Higher-density LiDAR data exponentially increase the ability to model the structure of a small object, capture detailed terrain variation across a small area, or define the ground below the canopies of dense forest areas," explains Sanchit Agarwal, Sanborn director of mapping operations.

"Our timely decision to purchase the state-of-the-art ALS70-HP system allows us to quench the market's thirst for denser LiDAR datasets," adds Agarwal. "With this new capability, Sanborn remains well positioned to offer high-quality, yet cost-effective LiDAR solutions and services to a broad range of customers."
