Encoder for Large Format Printer

A versatile and economical encoder solution was needed by an OEM customer for a line of high-quality large format printers. The customer was experiencing quality issues due to an inconsistent performance from a competitor’s glass scales and was seeking a more convenient metal tape scale solution for the required travels up to 4500 mm.

The Solution

MicroE paired a standard configuration compact Mercury II series digital output sensor with 1 µm resolution together with a Marker Tape that features an index every 50 mm. The multi-index Marker Tape can be offered in dispenser up to 30 meters in length (or cut to a specific length), making it an ideal option for OEMs producing axes of different lengths.

The Benefit

The chosen Mercury II sensor is a standard product that shortens lead time and minimizes cost. The application requires different long lengths of tape scale, and the ability to buy up to 30 meters of tape on a reel enables the OEM customer to stock just one scale part number. With indexes every 50 mm, the customer can cut scales to length and place the index where required.
