Terabee takes immense pleasure in announcing the launch of a new 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) depth-sensing camera, making the company’s position stronger in the 3D sensing field.

The new 3D camera has a compact and robust design and has been designed to offer a versatile and affordable depth-sensing platform to scientists, developers, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). It is developed for indoor purposes and offers 3D data on the basis of an 80 x 60 pixel depth image by measuring the ToF of a light signal between the camera and the object/subject.

We have been prototyping and working with 3D depth cameras for years now, mostly offering and testing these in customer projects to solve complex and unique robotics and IoT sensing challenges. We’ve developed knowledge and capability in the use and integration of depth sensing technologies in real-life scenarios. In fact, moving into the 3D camera market has been a customer-driven decision for us as we are receiving an increasing amount of inquiries relating to Smart Buildings and IoT. By offering higher pixel resolution and by broadening the cameras detection area, this opens new doors for us, particularly in relation to people and movement monitoring, volume measurement and gesture recognition.

Specifications and Easy Integration with OEM Applications

The camera provides an 80 x 60 pixel resolution with a broad 74° x 57° Field of View, functioning at 30 frames per second. Although it has a robust aluminum casing, the camera is still lightweight and compact, with a weight of just 83 g. Due to this, the Terabee 3Dcam 80x60 is perfect for applications where space is restricted and where heavier and bigger cameras are not compatible. Furthermore, the Terabee camera incorporates easy mounting options for discrete installations in embedded applications.

Versatile Operating Range

The camera has two operating means — one for 0.2–1.2 m and another for 1.2–4.0 m. The short-range mode is appropriate for close-up applications, for example, hand gesture tracking, whereas the standard mode is suitable for volume measurements and people monitoring, where large areas must be covered.

Privacy Protection

The Terabee 3Dcam 80x60 provides the ideal solution if the main concern is privacy. Terabee 3Dcam captures non-intrusive depth data when tracking people and their movements, which means no recognizable image is captured and personal privacy is protected always.

Detection in the Dark

The ToF technology allows the camera to be independent of the ambient illumination, thus rendering it ideal for applications with low light conditions and even pitch darkness.

Made for Developers

The Terabee 3Dcam 80x60 camera is available with a Software Development Kit, which includes drivers and sample code to get started. The kit can be easily installed and tested, guaranteeing depth data streaming by USB interface on Windows and Linux OS. The software offers access to OpenNI 1.5 and 2.2 frameworks, including C/C++ and Python sample codes for initiating application development. Additionally, Terabee offers drivers for Robot Operating System, allowing users to develop depth applications in the field of robotics.

3D Depth Sensing Applications

Other promising applications include:

  • Smart buildings — fall detection, occupancy monitoring in rooms, responsive display advertising, gesture recognition for device control
  • Mobile robotics — automated guided vehicles (navigation and obstacle avoidance)
  • Factory automation — object counting, classification, position detection, volume measurements, stock level monitoring, human-machine interface control
