Choosing the Right Distance Sensor for Your Business

Ultrasonic Sensor

Ultrasonic sensors transmit a pulse of ultrasonic sound waves and receive the echo using a single transducer. The sensor determines the distance to the target by calculating the time spent between the transmission and reception of the ultrasonic pulse.

Benefits

  1. It is reliable and stable. It has a strong resistance to corrosive liquids, no rotating parts, and anti-electromagnetic interference.
  2. It has a short wavelength, high frequency, and small diffraction phenomenon.

Drawbacks

  1. It has a weak anti-interference capability. The output accuracy could be interfered by acoustic noise, and multiple ultrasonic sensors of the same frequency might lead to crosstalk issue.
  2. It has a high false-alarm rate and large FOV. When identifying multiple targets or rough irregular surface, the reflective waves might lead to crosstalk.
  3. It provides restricted detection range, generally within 100 m.
  4. It is not ideal for measuring a rapidly moving target. When compared to other ranging solutions, the response time of sound wave is longer for transmission and reception.

mmWave Sensor

A mmWave sensor employs the electromagnetic wave sensing technology to detect neighboring objects and to measure the distance, angle, and velocity of these objects. It is a non-contact sensor that works in the spectrum in the range of 30–300 GHz. The mmWave sensor can pass through certain materials like drywall, plastic, and clothing. It provides good performance in adverse weather conditions, for example, dust, rain, snow, and fog.

Benefits

  2. It is susceptible to electromagnetic interference, which might elevate the false-alarm rate.
  3. It has low accuracy or may inaccurately detect static objects or thin objects like plastic, guardrail, clothing, or drywall.
  4. Speed blur and distance blur will take place unavoidably in the air defense environment.
