Meet the 141 Meteorological Stations Dotted Around the Carpathian Mountains in Hungary

As part of a development project, 141 new meteorological stations were installed in Hungary country-wide. This project was carried out on the Hungarian hydrometrical network, operated by the Hungarian Meteorological Service (OMSZ).

The requirements of the OMSZ are of the highest standard because obtaining meteorological measurements in the changeable climate of the Carpathian Basin – with gas and liquid precipitation – is a difficult undertaking.

The annual average of precipitation is between 500 and 700 mm; however, for some months, the precipitation can be zero.

The OMSZ conducted market research during the preparatory phase, and it was the OTT Pluvio2 that ultimately persuaded them.

Measuring Task

  • Obtain reliable and accurate monitoring data at every one of the 141 sites distributed across all parts of the country.
  • Record precise measurements even when precipitation was very low => OMSZ specification: weighing principle, no tipping buckets.
  • The instruments utilized have to be compatible with the existing telemetry systems.

Monitoring Solution

The OMSZ tested all of the instruments in their laboratory before installation could begin on site. To help achieve this, two Pluvio2 units were quickly distributed. However, only the sensors from the Pluvio2 units were delivered as all sites have to work on the existing, traditional communications network.

Due to the variety of outputs available, it was relatively simple to find a system integrator that provided dataloggers compatible with the complete system.

Summary

After a year of successful testing, the OMSZ took over the new network – ordering an additional 15 units of OTT Pluvio2 in the process. Today, OTT Hydromet has become the exclusive supplier for a variety of precipitation gauges in Hungary, with 60% of all meteorological sites in Hungary currently utilizing the Pluvio2.
