Heath Consultants was the first to launch a sophisticated methane leak detector based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS), leading to scores of legacy units across the world.
The RMLD-IS is a legacy instrument, with thousands of units sold around the world. It contains a couple of interactive components—a signal processing/user interface controller and a transceiver subsystem.
Both the Remote Methane Leak Detector – First Responder (RMLD-FR) and the Remote Methane Leak Detector – Complete Solution (RMLD-CS) avoid the need for the individual receiver and transceiver, integrating them into a single hand-held instrument that is portable, lightweight, and rugged for field applications.
The RMLD instruments help detect leaks without the need to travel the whole length of the pipeline, thereby facilitating safer surveys in hard-to-reach areas, like fenced-off areas, yards with dogs, busy roadways and other sites that are difficult to access.
The RMLD instrument works under a range of field conditions such as fog, light rain and a broad temperature range. It has a robust design that can withstand normal operating conditions and regular field use.
One Family of Instruments Serving Many Purposes
RMLD-CS™
Following the successful launch of the RMLD-IS and the growing market demand for a more lightweight and portable instrument, the marketing and engineering teams at Heath Consultants started to work on the latest model, the RMLD – Complete Solution (RMLD-CS™), for release in early 2019. This advanced instrument removes the individual receiver and transceiver, integrating them into one hand-held instrument that is portable, lightweight and field rugged.
Besides this, the instrument includes features demanded by the growing technology market. These features include GPS, Bluetooth BLE, WiFi, internal data logging, mobile application support, etc.
The RMLD-CS™ also includes additional new features:
- Lightweight
- Color camera
- Graphical user interface
- Dual battery charger
- Ergonomic housing
- Replaceable and rechargeable battery

RMLD-FR™
Using the RMLD – First Responder (RMLD-FR), first responders/fire service can rapidly scan standard venting points inside a structure from a safe distance to establish the presence of methane gas. The instrument is based on Heath Consultants’ extremely popular RMLD legacy and RMLD-CS designs containing many of the same functionality and features as the RMLD-CS™ version but with a streamlined user interface.
Most often, first responders/fire service are called to address both fires and major natural gas emergencies, using equipment that places them too close to possibly harmful structures.
The remote detection of the RMLD-FR™ enables the operators to shine the beam via most windows, providing them a visual and audible signal regarding the presence of methane gas. This rapid scan allows first responders to make quick decisions and determine the control of the gas and ignition sources if detection is present.
