USSI to Implement Optic Fiber Technology to Track Pipeline Status

Acorn Energy, Inc., a publicly-traded holding firm, declared that they have enhanced their equity proprietorship of US Sensor Systems Inc. (USSI) to about 51%. The company also has plans to raise its share to 84% in USSI.

The US Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration stated that the two million miles of pipelines inducted in the US has only about 100 supervisors to track and rectify the infrastructure issues.

The PipeSafe System of USSI is being integrated in the prevailing natural gas one-mile pipeline by a leading China’s petroleum company. The integration process is likely to be accomplished in the fourth quarter of October 2010 and plans are afoot to implement the device along 30 miles in 2011 and throughout thousands of miles in the coming years by the China- based oil Company.

John A. Moore, Acorn Energy’s Chairman and CEO stated that they are pleased to enhance their stake in USSI since USSI has the capability to track the pipeline leaks and explosions with the advent of their innovative technologies for modifying and updating the oil pipeline infrastructure, ensuring security and effectiveness with less environmental consequences.

Jim Andersen, CEO at USSI explained that their optic fiber technology is capable of tracking even minute leaks or disorder in the infrastructure with advanced safety measures thus eliminating the need of replacement of the structures.

The PipeSafe system features an optic fiber sensing wire that performs constant identification of vibration ranges and low amplitude noise and thus it tracks the surroundings. Upon locating the microphonic fiber cable in close proximity to the pipelines, the system tracks and locates the leak in pipelines automatically. Apart from this the system inspects various tampering events in pipelines such as vehicles driving, cutting, digging, operation of a drill motor etc.  The PipeSafe system recognizes signals with ten fold less noise compared to the conventional fiber optic systems.
