Wireless Sensors Make Home Automation Simpler

Applications of IEEE 802.15.4 wireless sensor network (WSN) chipsets in homes and other consumer durables are estimated to be more than 242 million annually by the year 2015.

According to principal analyst Jonathan Collins at ABI Research, WSN communications will be increasingly used in homes as designs are becoming more sophisticated. Globally, government departments are investing more into developing wireless appliances for consumer markets. Energy meters will receive and transmit information with wireless devices such as thermostats and other tools that help conserve energy and costs. Additionally, the ZigBee RF4CE specification deploying 802.15.4 ICs is being used as an alternative to InfraRed remotes with the support of CE players.
