A new clinical study published in Current Therapeutic Research1 affirms that the temporal artery (TA) thermometer is the most accurate substitute for rectal measurement in children. The study tested the accuracy of less invasive thermometers, including tympanic, infrared skin scan, and temporal artery, compared to rectal measurement to reflect core temperature.
The research was conducted at the University Hospitals, Leuven, Belgium. A total of 294 pediatric patients, with a median age of 3.2 years, were included and temperature measurements were collected consecutively from each device in every patient.
