Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement and Leak Detection for Corrosion Control

Cygnus 1 Ex for Corrosion Inspection

Storage structures such as tanks and pipelines regularly exposed to fluids, chemicals, or heat are vulnerable to corrosion. To help prevent this, they are typically coated with protective layers. However, these coatings can make corrosion monitoring and inspection more difficult.

The Cygnus Surface Range of ultrasonic thickness gauges (UTGs) can measure through coatings up to 20 mm thick, eliminating the need to remove protective layers during inspections. These gauges are compatible with both single-crystal and twin-crystal probes to suit different corrosion levels and material types.

In industries such as oil and gas refineries and terminals (where hazardous materials are present and explosive atmospheres may occur), regular maintenance is essential for safety. The Cygnus 1 Ex ultrasonic thickness gauge is designed for use in Gas Zones 0, 1, and 2 and is certified as intrinsically safe to Zone 0 under ATEX, IECEx, and UKEX standards.

Thanks to its intrinsic safety design, the 1 Ex can be used in hazardous areas without requiring a Hot Work Permit or plant shutdown, making it suitable for routine inspection in these environments. The gauge also offers data logging for easier reporting and includes a manual measurement mode, allowing users to configure gates and gain to match their application.

Hatch Sure for Testing Tightness or Leakage

Over time, the structural integrity of storage facilities can deteriorate, leading to seal fatigue and leakage. The Cygnus Hatch Sure Ultrasonic Tightness Tester provides a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional methods such as hose testing and visual inspection.

The system’s transmitter includes 19 ultrasound emitters (40 kHz) with six adjustable power levels, making it suitable for different test area sizes, including confined spaces. It is lightweight, portable, and has a rucksack-style carry case and straps for hands-free operation.

Cygnus Hatch Sure is designed for simple one-person operation. With minimal training, users can test watertight doors, closing appliances, and storage areas for seal integrity without clearing the space. Inspections can be conducted without clearing the space, facilitating regular evaluations that help prevent costly maintenance and repairs.
