When many UTGs require shutdowns or hot-work permits, the Cygnus 1 Ex enables safe, frequent in-service thickness measurements in explosive atmospheres. It integrates rugged functionality with Cygnus’ top-of-the-range multiple-echo technology, which enables precise through-coating measurements while ignoring coatings up to 20 mm thick.

The Multiple Echo technique is a product of Cygnus Instruments, now widely known and specified by Classification Societies for Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UTM) across the marine industry.
Unlike traditional UTGs, which rely on the first echo returned, the Cygnus multiple-echo approach accounts for several back-wall echoes from the metal substrate. This automatically overrides the coating layer, guaranteeing:
- Precise readings of remaining metal thickness
- Protective coatings don’t need to be removed
- Corrosion protection systems are preserved
- Lower cost and higher efficiency
