Sapphire and Spinel Domes Shield Electronic Sensors and Detectors

Providence-based Meller Optics is releasing its new sapphire and spinel optical domes to furnish front surface shielding to electronic sensing units and detectors to withstand extreme industrial and aerospace conditions.

The sapphire domes from the company features maximum 1600 included angles to enhace the observation angles of imagers, sensing units, detecting devices and other equipments to supply intense physical security in extreme conditions. It also has the potentiality to resist dirt, water, moving sand and chemicals and they can be custom-made with accurate profiles and edge steps for various installation applications.

The sapphire domes supply 85% communication uncoated in the ultraviolet to the infrared spectrum of light with 99 % transmissions when A/R coated on two sides. These optical domes thus show Moh 9 hardness (secondary to diamond) and can be delivered in sizes with four inches O.D. having surface finishes with 20 to 10 scratch-dig. These optical domes can also be configured in sizes over six inches O.D. from spinel that display Moh 8 hardness.
