Chloribrid® Hybrid Residual Chlorine Analyzer

Measurements of free and total residual chlorine are among the most critical assessments in a water treatment facility. This is because operators cannot ensure the safety of the produced water without them.

Chloribrid® combines two primary measurement technologies: electrochemical and DPD (online), both offered by Pi. Each technology has its own advantages and disadvantages. The patented Chloribrid® chlorine analyzer integrates both technologies into a hybrid instrument, eliminating the drawbacks of each and delivering a straightforward device that retains the benefits of both electrochemical and online DPD technologies.

Principle of Operation

In simple terms, the Chloribrid® chlorine analyzer uses an electrochemical sensor whenever feasible and verifies its accuracy with the DPD every hour. This process provides a continuous chlorine measurement that responds quickly, with a self-check approximately every hour against an alternative technology.

If a significant discrepancy occurs, the system triggers an alarm and continues using the user's preferred technology until a user can intervene.

The Chloribrid® chlorine analyzer is particularly well-suited for environments where reliability and user-friendliness are paramount, a single point of failure is undesirable, and the analyzer's durability is critical, such as in unmanned and remote locations.

In a start-up scenario, Chloribrid® utilizes online DPD measurements (every three minutes) to report the chlorine residual level until the deviation between the online DPD and the electrochemical sensor stabilizes. At that point, the Chloribrid® chlorine analyzer calibrates the electrochemical sensor output using the online DPD reading, and the DPD reverts to checking the electrochemical sensor every hour (as set by the user).

Extended Maintenance Periods and Long Life DPD Reagent

One benefit of an electrochemical sensor compared to an online DPD colorimeter is longer maintenance intervals (ranging from six months to one year versus monthly). Online DPD monitors require monthly maintenance because the reagent they use is consumed and deteriorates over time.

With Chloribrid®, the advantage of a six-month maintenance interval for the electrochemical sensor remains intact because Pi’s DPD reagent does not deplete within a month (as the measurement frequency shifts from every three minutes to every 60 minutes) and does not degrade due to a novel and proprietary DPD formulation, which has been proven to maintain stability for over six months, even at elevated temperatures (40 °C).
