Pi’s SoliSense® measures suspended solids concentrations from 2 NTU to over 8%. Its integrated sensor measures suspended solids from 2 NTU to 8% in wastewater and up to 50% in other solid types.
This device serves wastewater, potable water, mixed liquor suspended solids, return activated sludge, centrate, filtrate, sludge, and various other monitoring needs where a standard turbidimeter or suspended solids meter is typically utilized. The SoliSense® TSS Meter features automatic cleaning that propels water or air across the optical windows, maintaining clarity.
The SoliSense® range of TSS Meters is based on a patented Suspended Solids Meter solution.
Principle of Operation – No Zero!
Each SoliSense® suspended solids meter is equipped with a light source and two detectors for taking measurements. Two detectors, positioned at varying distances from the light source, enable the TSS Meter to operate across a broad range of solids concentrations.
The light source is a durable infrared LED emitter, offering a 15-year operational lifespan. The detectors are paired photodiodes configured to sense backscattered light, specifically, light scattered beyond 90 degrees. Measuring backscattered light allows the TSS Meter to detect both low and high solids concentrations. This setup enables precise, dependable measurements of solids concentration (mg/L) and turbidity (NTU).
Calibrating the SoliSense® for turbidity or low-solids-concentration samples is straightforward and requires only one calibration sample. This sample may originate from an alternative method's reading or a relevant standard.
The TSS Meter self-calibrates by incrementally lowering light output across four stages and recording data at each step. This method delivers precise and dependable zero and span values, eliminating the need for a '0' NTU/solids sample.
For high-solids-concentration samples, the SoliSense® uses multi-point calibration to achieve peak accuracy. It can use up to five calibration points, ensuring precise operation across diverse sample concentration ranges.
The SoliSense® suspended solids meter can be pole-mounted for immersion in a channel or tank, or inserted into a pipeline through a valve, enabling sensor retraction or removal without process interruption.

Each probe has two detectors and a light source. The light source is a long-life infrared LED emitter, with an ability to work for nearly 15 years.
By Using Two Detectors in a Single Probe it is Possible to:
- Measure solids from 0.001 to 500 g/l (50% solids) – Silicates
- Measure solids from 0.001 to 80 g/l (8% solids) – Sludge
- Measure turbidity from 2 NTU to 4,000 NTU
The electronics deliver a fully scalable output, enabling the SoliSense® to measure any portion - or the entire range - of the scale. The sensor probe uses an integrated water jet to clean optical lenses regularly. The system is suitable for applications ranging from low NTU to % solids. Up to five calibration points enable the system to accurately measure various sample concentrations.
The probes use sapphire optical windows and 316 stainless steel to withstand extreme operating environments. For solids monitoring at any point in a wastewater treatment plant, this instrument offers a self‑cleaning sensor and compatible accessories, ensuring reliable operation even where other instruments have failed.
