Principle of Operation
The system has a blue light source which, when illuminated, excites or activates the sensing element, the lumiphore. The activated lumiphore emits red light with an intensity that is inversely proportional to the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water.
A measurable time delay exists between the peak emission of blue light and the peak response of fluoresced red light, and this delay is inversely related to the concentration of dissolved oxygen.
This time delay is considered to be a phase shift between the wave patterns of fluoresced red light and the incident blue light. The DO meter measures this as a mg/l or ppm reading of dissolved oxygen.
The system shows high resistance to abrasion and is more stable than conventional electrochemical devices.

Applications
Online measurement of dissolved oxygen in an oxidation ditch or aeration lane requires a DO meter and is essential for efficient plant operation. Since aeration with blowers often accounts for around 50% of a wastewater plant’s operating costs, any drift or measurement inaccuracy can lead to significant financial losses.
To use DO meters to control blowers, the system must be drift-free, reliable, and low-maintenance, since maintaining DO meters and dissolved oxygen analyzers is expensive.
