BSI, in its role as the UK National Standards Body, publishes a new code of practice to help organizations correctly adopt Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). The new PAS1918 standard offers new guidance to help manufacturers looking to maximize the efficiency of their existing production systems.
TPM is a management system for equipment management and productivity maintenance and improvement mainly the discrete parts manufacturing industries and process industries centred on automation lines, with the aim of reducing losses to zero. This PAS focuses on the basic concept of the TPM and the KPIs involved in implementing the TPM and provides a guide on the TPM for manufacturing plants and equipment.
As TPM has been adopted globally and this approach has become more widespread, the technique is often diluted and not implemented correctly. TPM can be applied to all areas, including the production, development and administration departments, from management to front line employees.
PAS 1918:2022 can help manufacturing and process industries to:
- Adopt a consistent and standardized approach to TPM
- Improve productivity
- Enter new markets and supply chains
- Improve process efficiency
- Improve risk management
This PAS can also be applied to any organization in the discrete parts manufacturing industries and process industries. It is intended for people involved in the operation and maintenance of plants and equipment, manufacturing departments, quality departments, maintenance departments, production departments and supply chains.
Advocated by JIPM in 1971, TPM is now being adopted and popularized in various manufacturing industries around the world. In addition, the requirements of IATF16949 (Automotive Industry Quality Management System Standard) stipulate that TPM should be used, which is an effective means for "quality management" and "improvement of productivity" of the entire supply chain of the automobile industry.
