Eaton Debuts Shunt Trip Safety Switch with Remote Tripping Facility

Power management company Eaton today announced new safety switches that provide remote tripping and a visible means of disconnect for commercial and industrial applications. The safety switches are the first in the industry to incorporate a shunt trip module. When signaled remotely, the device will electrically trip the switch, enhancing personnel safety and expanding the range of applications where safety switches can be applied.

Shunt Trip for Safety Switches

“Eaton continues to deliver innovative solutions to improve electrical safety,” said Brendan Foley, product line manager, Eaton. “The new shunt trip switch enhances personnel safety by reducing contact with energized equipment and helps increase uptime to support the reliable performance of critical applications.”

The new safety switches are designed to communicate with equipment sensors to identify unauthorized or unsafe conditions, and disconnect the machine’s power source to help protect personnel and equipment. The switch is also engineered to seamlessly integrate into safety interlock systems.

Additionally, remote signaling from commonly monitored electrical conditions such as ground fault, under voltage, over voltage, phase loss, phase rotation and blown fuses can now be coordinated with the shunt trip safety switches to enhance circuit protection.

The shunt trip safety switch builds on Eaton’s extensive portfolio of safety switch solutions, incorporating a side-handle operation mechanism and visible blade indication that have decades of successful installation and operation. The switch is available in two-, three- and four-pole configurations for maximum system voltages of 600 volts of alternating current (AC) and 1000 volts of direct current (DC) with fusible and non-fusible protection options.

The Eaton shunt trip safety switches meet Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standards and are listed to the UL98 standard for AC configurations and UL98B for DC configurations. Each safety switch is engineered to reduce customer downtime and improve personnel safety. To learn more, visit https://www.eaton.com/us/en-us.html.
