eleven-x’s Advanced WIU-X Water Monitoring Solution Deployed to Major Municipal Water Supply

Canadian company eleven-x Inc. provides full-service low-power IoT solutions and operates the first and only public coast-to-coast network specifically optimized for the internet of things (IoT).

Now, together with the Region of Waterloo, eleven-x has announced that its WIU-X wireless LoRaWAN™ water level and temperature monitoring solution has been deployed for use across the Region’s water well infrastructure that delivers water to 570,000 residents.

The deployment comes after the end of an effective pilot program, in which the eleven-x WIU-X water level and temperature monitoring interface was integrated with a number of the Region’s existing dataloggers tracking production and monitoring wells. Moving ahead, the incorporation of eleven-x’s WIU-X interface with the Region’s existing dataloggers utilized in their monitoring and production wells, will offer wireless connectivity to the instruments of the Region.

For the Region, the outcome is streamlined operations like real-time well water data being gathered and automatically communicated on an hourly basis. Earlier, the Region had to pay for manual collection of the data on a quarterly basis. The eleven-x solution also offers event-driven real-time alerts on the basis of pre-determined parameters, like considerable level fluctuations, additionally enhancing the overall monitoring program.

Apart from the operational enhancements, the Region will also be able to save costs from their groundwater monitoring program. Offering wireless connectivity for presently deployed dataloggers not only brings down upfront hardware purchase expenses but also provides a saving of 76% when compared to buying new dataloggers.

In addition to the savings on the hardware, the Region will also be able to save an extra 20% of the total program costs every year by removing the fees associated with manual data collection. With regards to the overall program expenses, the Region can realize a return on investment in just two years—less than one quarter the time of a solution that needs the procurement of new dataloggers.

The pilot program highlighted the improvements that this solution can bring to our service. Having access to accurate and timely data in our monitoring wells and the information it offers us improves the management of this key resource. The eleven-x solution reduces our operating costs and provides timely access to our groundwater monitoring data. Knowing what is happening on an hourly basis enables us to optimize this program and the supply of drinking water.

Nancy Kodousek, Director, Water Services, Region of Waterloo

Water supply is a key resource for all cities and municipalities in Canada. Efficiently monitoring that water supply is a key requirement to ensure the continued sustainability of that resource. Being able to provide a solution to provide fast and accurate data to optimize this process for municipalities is something that we are very proud of.
