Zytronic Projected Capacitive Touch Sensor Technology for Innovative User Interfaces

The latest touch-screen solution from Zytronic’s unique PCT(TM)-technology has found its way to Microsoft Corporation's Envisioning Lab where the touch-sensor is used in a multi-monitor, fully touch-enabled workstation referred to as the Lab’s Spatial Desk.

The Spatial Desk comes with ten independent yet linkable displays, orientated in both horizontal and vertical positions around a user. The challenge for Zytronic's engineers was to produce a single, continuous touch surface covering vertical displays. This task was met with a curved capacitive touch sensor, which not only offered responsive and flawless touch functionality but could also work in tandem with the shape of the workstation.

The advantage of Zytronic's patented PCT technology is that it allows the projective capacitance touch sensing to be applied to large format displays thereby allowing touch-screen designers to create innovative user interfaces.

John Snavely, who heads up the Envisioning design team at Microsoft, stated that the Spatial Desk will define future development strategies and also help in bringing advanced hardware/software solutions to market.

Located in the Executive Briefing Center of Microsoft 's global headquarters at Redmond, the primary objective of the Envisioning Lab is to exhibit Microsoft's next generation technologies to its primary customers while simultaneously providing an environment in which their hardware and software professionals can explore new possibilities and experiment with ideas.
