OmniVision Technologies has launched its 8-megapixel image sensor, incorporating the OmniBSI-2 pixel architecture.
The OV8830 features the backside illumination (BSI) pixel technology, is power efficient and compact, with high image quality. It increases fast frame rate picture capture and 1080p or 720p HD video recording.

The device is constructed on 300mm wafers deploying a copper process having 65nm design rules in collaboration with the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The design rules enhance performance and reduce crosstalk.
The 1/3.2-inch device features high frame rates, an incorporated scaler and 2x2 binning functions. The scaler helps to stabilize electronic images and maintains field of view in 1080p/30 HD video mode. Its post-binning re-sampling filter reduces spatial components. It eliminates image artifacts around edges, providing clear, sharp color pictures for 720p HD video. The device is 8.5x8.5x6mm in size.
According to Vinoo Margasahayam, product marketing manager for OmniVision, besides high picture quality, the product also offers power efficiency in a small footprint to make it suitable for use in smart phones.
