Cypress CapSense Solution Integrates Multiple Functions in LG's HDTVs

The PSoC-enabled CapSense solution of Cypress Semiconductor has been selected by LG Electronics for implementing a range of control functions in its ‘LE’ high-definition, LED backlit digital televisions line.

The CapSense-enabled TVs of LG include 42- to 60-inch models in the LE750, LE650, LE530, LE540, and LE550 lines. The new range of LG TVs will empower customers to tap in the future of broadband TV and online connectivity. Wireless HD is able to eliminate messy wires and provides a range of features that raise the user experience to the next level. The overall feel and look has been optimized, along with mechanical buttons replaced by CalSense, for increasing viewing pleasure.

This solution was selected by the design team of LG due to its capability for the integration of multiple functions into a single chip and better noise immunity. A single CapSense chip is able to control touch controls and more than 20 LEDs. This chip can also configure the LED effects while the buttons are activated and control the TVs buzzer. This CapSense solution helps LG to reconfigure dynamically the capacitive sensing hardware for dealing with various system noise problems and offer best in class sensing. Such a noise immunity level is not offered by other capacitive sensing systems at present, enabling LG to easily and quickly pass rigorous electromagnetic susceptibility (EMS) stipulations that exceed world standards.

LG Electronics’ chief research engineer Dong Myeong Kim informed that CapSense’s ability to implement many features into a chip enable LG to streamline the design. Cypress’s User Interface Business Unit’s Vice President Dhwani Vyas added that the design win demonstrates the multiple benefits provided to customers, more so in optimizing the total user experience that is vital for product differentiation.

The CapSense touch sensing system from Cypress has resulted in replacement of about 3.5 billion mechanical buttons in automotive, mobile handsets, consumer electronics, laptops and white goods applications.  It improves reliability and industrial design with the most water tolerant capacitive touch detecting and noise immunity interfaces, as well as proximity detection where direct touch is not needed.

PSoC gadgets utilize a system-on-chip architecture that is highly configurable for embedded control system, providing a flash-enabled counterpart of an ASIC that is field configurable without NRE or lead time penalties.  PSoC gadgets are able to integrate configurable digital and analog circuits and are controlled through an on-chip
microcontroller for offering component count savings and improved design revision capability.
