The Germany-based image analysis solution company Definiens, s, and Trimble have announced the acquisition of the assets of the Earth Sciences business of Definiens. The acquisition also includes Definiens’ licensing of the all-cash transaction software technology platform. The acquired business’ operating results will be reported by the Engineering and Construction segment of Trimble.
TheEarth Sciences business of Definiens includes the eCognition software, which is a suite of enhanced image analysis software for geospatial applications. It enables quick and precise extraction of geo-information from remote sensing imagery.
Original object-enabled image analysis (OBIA) software is being utilized by university researchers in security, urban planning, insurance, forestry, energy and agriculture, as well as industry leading remote sensing professionals and data providers for a decade almost. The scalable eCognition software provides an exhaustive range of tools for developing powerful image analysis applications for handling common data sources like hyperspectral, radar, high- to medium-resolution satellite, high-resolution aerial photography, and laser scanner.
The patented Cognition Network Technology of Definiens was developed by Laureate Prof. Gerd Binnig, a Nobel Laureate in 1986, and his team. The technology platform imitates the perceptive human cognitive processes for extracting intelligence from images.
The innovative technology can easily and quickly convert user domain expertise and knowledge into automatic routines. Definiens is using enhanced machine learning theories for software training and makes this knowledge available in the manufacturing scenario, so that the software is able to process many images automatically.
Definiens CEO Thomas Heydler informed that the acquisition of the Earth Sciences business of Definiens by Trimble is ideal fit for both companies. He explained that eCognition provides global class image analysis capabilities to Trimble for complementing its wide portfolio of geospatial solutions and products. At the same time, it ermits Definiens to concentrate on image analysis for the healthcare industry.
