New Version of PROFINET for Process Automation and Manufacturing Applications

PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) has accomplished another crucial objective for PROFINET, subsequent to the achievement of the PROFINET for Process Automation application profile.

PROFINET can thus be deployed for process automation and manufacturing purposes.

Process automation has rigorous constraints for consistency and accessibility. For instance, the industries should execute continuous constant production throughout a year without any disruption, and must be maintained to provide developments to the manufacturing process. The interruptions should be detected in spite of the intricacy of the sensors and actuators used in the process. Another difficulty was the use of numerous signals in the industrial unit.

About four main characteristics were added to the novel profile including configuration in run; Integration of existing fieldbuses; time harmonization; time stamping; and scalable redundancy. The fabricators apply these functional aspects into PROFINET solutions for process automation purposes.

The major process relating to  ‘PROFINET for Process Automation’ application outline is provided in V2.3 PROFINET Specification that has been included in the November SPS/IPC/DRIVES 2010. Apart from the novel process automation-based specifications, this innovative model of the PROFINET also includes high performance specifications.
