Google Autonomous Car Has Prang
An autonomous Google car was involved in a crash near the Mountain View headquarters of the internet giant. The statement issued by Google said that the car was being driven by a human when the accident happened.
The self driving Prius was in manual mode when it was involved in a minor collision with another Prius. Google has been road testing its self driven cars in California for some years now. As part of the testing of the cars a driver is at the wheel ready to takeover if the self driving systems of the car fails.
The details of the incident would be brought to light once Google is able to access the Prius self driven car’s computer logs. Should the sensors have been turned on during the drive they will be able to tell the story of what exactly was happening around the car. Its systems will be able to show if it was in manual more and it would also give details of speed, braking and wheel turn.
The incident came to light when a Jalopnik reader sent the auto blog a photo of the fender bender with another Prius. There was a quick response to that from a Google spokesperson who said that safety was their top priority. One of their goals was to prevent fender-benders like this one, which occurred while a person was manually driving the car.
