STMicroelectronics Expands Motion-Sensing Portfolio with Compact 3-Axis Low-Power Gyroscope

STMicroelectronics, a provider of semiconductor service solutions and supplier of micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) for portable and consumer applications, added the industry’s compact 3-axis digital-output L3G3200D gyroscope to its existing product portfolio.

Since the package size of the digital output gyroscope is reduced to half when compared to pre-existing sensors, it ensures advanced level of motion sensing in the ever-shrinking form factors of future generation tablets, mobile phones and other smart electronic devices. Even though the 3-axis digital output gyroscope with dimension of 3 x 3.5 x 1 mm has a single-sensing structure, it shows outstanding strength and resistance to mechanical stress, along with an excellent stability of temperature to offer increased-performance motion sensing along all the three directions of its orthogonal axes.

The new digital output L3G3200D gyroscopic sensor is designed with power-down and sleep mode options for resolving the power constraints, when it is used in battery-powered portable devices. It also includes an integrated first-in first-out (FIFO) memory unit for excellent power management. The L3G3200D gyroscope can be operated using supply voltages ranging from 2.4V to3.6V, having selectable full-scale ranges of +/- 250/500/200 dps.

The ST’s 3-axis digital output gyroscope delivers output data of 16-bit on the interrupt and data-ready lines. The L3G3200D gyroscope is incorporated with the low- and high-pass filters over user-selectable frequency bandwidth. The ST’s low-power gyroscope is provided with a temperature sensor having an 8-bit data output and it can be operated in extreme temperature conditions ranging from -40°C to +85°C.
