Sensors Expo 2013: MEMSIC Debuts Two-Axis Magnetic Sensor

MEMSIC Inc., a leading sensor solution provider, announced today at Sensors Expo (Booth #417) the availability of its MMC246xMT Two-Axis Magnetic Sensor. This fully integrated high performance part is provided in a miniature 2.0 mm. x 2.0 mm. x 1.0 mm. Land Grid Array (LGA) package and is capable of operating from a single 1.8 V supply.

It offers the industry's best performance at the lowest power consumption for a two-axis magnetic sensor, making it ideal for portable applications. Applications include electronic compassing, in-vehicle GPS assist, GPS wristwatches and industrial field measurements including traffic control and parking management.

The MEMSIC MMC246xMT Two-Axis Magnetic Sensor uses MEMSIC's proprietary anisotropic magnetic resistive (AMR) technology to achieve its high performance. Operating over the range of +/- 6 Gauss full scale, its fully integrated design provides all of the necessary circuit functions to facilitate its design into systems while saving space, reducing cost and increasing reliability over other solutions that require external circuit elements.

It exhibits superior performance in critical electrical design parameters including dynamic range, accuracy over temperature and power consumption. Its low noise of 0.8 mG total RMS and resolution of 0.25 mG per least significant bit (LSB) result in a more accurate heading determination with less averaging in addition to having a < +/- 2 mG bias error over the -40 to + 85 degree Centigrade temperature range. The low operating current of 20 uA (in 14- bit mode) and 50 uA (in 16 -bit mode) along with its < 20 nA current in the power down mode make it the most energy efficient two-axis magnetic sensor commercially available today, extending battery life to accommodate the stringent power budgets demanded in portable applications. The on-demand SET/RESET functions allow the end user the ability to eliminate bias drift over temperature and the flexibility of choosing how the feature can be used to maximize performance and minimize power consumption in their specific application.

Mr. John Newton, MEMSIC Vice President of Marketing, said, "The introduction of our Two-Axis Magnetic Sensor solidifies MEMSIC's position as the industry's magnetic sensor leader. It offers the best price/performance solution for a production two-axis magnetic sensor in the market today. The small 2.0 mm. x 2.0 mm. x 1.0 mm. BGA package has the same footprint and pin-out of the award-winning three-axis magnetic sensor we introduced last year, ensuring that our existing magnetic sensor customers can rely on us to provide long-term support of their designs, thus eliminating their need to create expensive and time-consuming new PCB layouts. We expect this device to win major acceptance in the design community because of its ease in integrating into designs, its small-sized LGA packaging and low power consumption -- all crucial requirements in many of today's high-volume applications."
