Satellite Tracking Technology Holds Potential for Commercial Air Transport Sector

Recent media focus on aircraft tracking technology underscores significant gaps in traditional approaches (radar, transponder, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), and radio communication). These technologies, or combinations of them, are typically used by the scheduled commercial air transport sector (refer to Figure 1). The gaps are particularly relevant when tracking aircraft in remote areas where traditional tracking infrastructure can be limited, for instance, outside radar coverage.

Today Texas Instruments (TI) announces its first programmable microcontroller (MCU) solution to handle resolver-to-digital decoding: The C2000™ MCU Resolver Kit. Because the resolver is an analog, rotary electrical transformer, it has historically required an application-specific circuit — which can be costly and space consuming – to convert to digital signals for use by a digital processor in a control system.
