ON Semiconductor, Teledyne Imaging Sensors Partner to Produce ELS ROIC for Astronomy

ON Semiconductor, driving innovation in energy efficiency, has collaborated with Teledyne Imaging Sensors to manufacture an Extremely Large Stitched Read Out Integrated Circuit (ELS ROIC) for astronomy. The H4RG-15 image sensor, designed by Teledyne, is the latest generation of a 20-year effort sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and Teledyne internal funding to develop increasingly larger and more powerful infrared sensors for astronomical research.

Measuring Air Quality Using Mobile Sensors Installed on Vehicles

Rather than installing stations on fixed towers, why not use mobile sensors spread out over the whole city to get better air quality measurements? OpenSense, a project run by four laboratories at EPFL and one at ETH Zurich, is studying the possibility of installing sensors on the roofs of buses and trams, thus taking advantage of already existing public transport and mobile phone networks. Testing is currently underway in Lausanne.

Fingerprint Cards Receives Order to Supply Area Sensors in China

Fingerprint Cards AB (FPC) has received an order worth SEK 20 M from its distributor in China and Taiwan, Hardware & Software Technologies Co. Ltd (HST). The order encompasses the FPC1011F3 area sensor. Delivery of the entire order is scheduled for 2013, partly in the first quarter and partly in the second quarter.

Planar Optronic Systems to Develop Innovative Optical Sensors for Thin, Flexible Polymer Films

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has given its approval for the establishment of two new Collaborative Research Centers (SFB) at the University of Freiburg on 1 January 2013. The SFB "Leisure. Concepts, Spaces, Figures" will receive just under 5.6 million euros in funding. The SFB/Transregio "Planar Optronic Systems," which will be distributed among several locations, will receive a total of 9.8 million euros. The DFG announced the decision today in Bonn. The two centers will receive funding until 31 December 2016.
