Richard Baraniuk, Rice’s Victor E. Cameron Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been named the winner of the 2014 IEEE Signal Processing Society Technical Achievement Award.

Baraniuk was cited for his “contributions to the theory and applications of sparsity and compressive sensing.” The award honors a person who has made outstanding technical contributions to theory and/or practice over a period of years, as demonstrated by publications, patents or recognized impact on the field. Baraniuk was one of the early contributors to the field of compressive sensing, which has enabled the design of new kinds of digital cameras and medical imaging devices.
IEEE, the former Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, will present the award in April at the organization’s International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing in Brisbane, Australia. Baraniuk will be a plenary speaker at the conference and will discuss machine learning for education applications. Earlier this year IEEE honored Baraniuk with its 2015 James H. Mulligan Jr. Education Medal for his work with Connexions and OpenStax College.
