Liquid Crystal Elastomer Material Holds Promise for Advanced Sensors

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), essentially rubbers with liquid crystal properties, can do a number of fascinating things, especially in the fields of optics, photonics, telecommunications and medicine. They can curl up, bend, twist, wrinkle and stretch when exposed to light, heat, gases and other stimuli. Because they are so responsive, they are ideal for applications like artificial muscles and blood vessels, actuators, sensors, plastic motors and drug delivery systems. They can even be used as a mechanically tunable mirrorless “rubber” laser.

Semtech, myDevices Partner to Build Interactive IoT Demo Platform for LoRa IoT Solutions

Semtech Corporation, a leading supplier of analog and mixed-signal semiconductors, today announced a technology partnership with myDevices, an Internet of Things (IoT) solutions company that helps simplify the connected world, to build an interactive IoT demonstration platform using advanced visualization tools. The interactive platform will allow LoRa® hardware manufacturers to showcase their modules and sensors remotely and in real time.

U.S. Air Force Awards BAE Systems $278.5 Million Contract to Provide Radar Support Services

The U.S. Air Force has awarded BAE Systems a five-year contract to provide multiple agencies with a wide range of radar support services. The contract, for the Instrumentation Radar Support Program (IRSP), is valued at a total of $278.5 million and will be incrementally funded.

NASA Suspends Launch of 'Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations Geodesy and Heat Transport' Mission

After thorough examination, NASA managers have decided to suspend the planned March 2016 launch of the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) mission. The decision follows unsuccessful attempts to repair a leak in a section of the prime instrument in the science payload.
