Qualcomm, Imec to Accelerate Scaling Technologies for Logic and Memory Devices

Nanoelectronics research centre imec and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, announced today an extended collaboration agreement to accelerate scaling technologies for logic and memory devices. The first fabless integrated circuit company to become a core partner of imec, Qualcomm Technologies will gain comprehensive insight into all advanced process technologies under investigation at imec to help shape future product roadmaps.

Sensirion Releases Differential Pressure Sensors for Mass Flow Measurement in Bypass Configuration

The Swiss sensor manufacturer Sensirion recently added new differential pressure sensors to its proven SDP600 series. The SDP601 and SDP611 sensors are differential pressure sensors specifically calibrated for measuring mass flow in a bypass configuration.

New Body-Fixed Sensor Monitors Life-Span of Joint Implant

Joint replacements have a limited lifespan. Implant wear is usually to blame for the necessary revision surgery. Despite new breakthroughs in the development of advanced polyethylene, longer life-spans and active patient lifestyles have compromised the life-span of the artificial joint. However, according to a study presented at the Orthopaedic Research Society's 2013 Annual Meeting in San Antonio this month, it appears that the intensity of activity has more impact on implant wear than previously believed.

Since 1988, scientists from the University of Hawaii have been conducting almost monthly deep-sea research expeditions to collect water samples for subsequent laboratory analysis. Originally designed to characterize subtle long-term changes in environments that were believed to be stable, the work has revealed some surprising conclusions. For example, it has become evident that even in these quasi-stable ocean systems, gradual environmental change can often result in abrupt shifts from the equilibrium state.
