NASA-Funded Team Launches Balloons to Track Behavior of Particles in Radiation Belts

In the bright, constant sun of the Antarctic summer, a NASA-funded team is launching balloons. There are twenty of these big, white balloons, each of which sets off on a different day for a leisurely float around the South Pole to collect information about something far more speedy: the rain of particles that can precipitate out of two gigantic donuts around Earth known as the radiation belts.

Dual Microphone System Functions as Automatic Road Traffic Sensor

An EPFL doctoral student has designed a microphone-based system that functions as an automatic road traffic sensor. The technology can determine not just how much traffic there is, but also how fast vehicles are going and even their size. It has already sparked an interest in the Swiss towns of Sion and Martigny.

Toshiba Develops Contact Image-Sensor Module for Recognition of Banknotes

Toshiba Corporation today announced that it will enter the linear image-sensor market for banknote recognition applications, a high growth business. The company has developed a contact image-sensor module (CISM) for banknote recognition as its first product, and mass production is scheduled for June 2013.

Practical Circuitry Affects Performance of Compressed Sensing Technology

The last 10 years have seen a flurry of research on an emerging technology called compressed sensing. Compressed sensing does something that seems miraculous: It extracts more information from a signal than the signal would appear to contain. One of the most celebrated demonstrations of the technology came in 2006, when Rice University researchers produced images with a resolution of tens of thousands of pixels using a camera whose sensor had only one pixel.
