Ben Gurion Airport Deploys Saab Sensis' A-SMGCS for Safe Aircraft Operations

The Israel Airports Authority is now using Saab Sensis' Advanced-Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) for the safe operation of aircraft maneuvering on the surface of Ben Gurion International Airport. The A-SMGCS fuses multiple surveillance technologies for a comprehensive view of Ben Gurion's runways and taxiways and provides proactive safety alerts to the controllers for runway incursion prevention at Israel's capital airport.

Brain-Machine Interface Enables Rats to Sense Normally Invisible Infrared Light

Researchers have given rats the ability to "touch" infrared light, normally invisible to them, by fitting them with an infrared detector wired to microscopic electrodes implanted in the part of the mammalian brain that processes tactile information. The achievement represents the first time a brain-machine interface has augmented a sense in adult animals, said Duke University neurobiologist Miguel Nicolelis, who led the research team.

Utilities across the U.S. are beginning to turn to transformer technologies to improve distribution reliability and efficiency as well as customer service and operating costs. In addition, more intelligent transformers will play a key role in enabling other smart grid applications such as power quality monitoring, closed-loop volt/VAR control, improved outage detection, and theft reduction. The annual market for transformer monitoring hardware in the U.S. is expected to grow from $113 million in 2012 to more than $755 million in 2020. Leading the transformer monitoring market are grid giants ABB, Siemens, GE, Alstom Grid and Schneider Electric.
